The Sonata for Solo English
Horn or Oboe
was written for Thomas Stacy in 1986, and extensively revised
for its publication in 1998. The 12-minute work is in one movement,
and is characterized by quick changes in character and mood.
Free passages of long notes show off the instrument's beauty
of tone, while long legato lines alternating with fast passage
work (including tibral shifts and double trills) show flexibility
and virtuosity.
