Program Notes

Its brevity implied by the title, Fanfares comprises three movements with a total duration of approximately seven minutes. As fanfares, the movements are generally homophonic, rhythmic, and brightly colored.

Yet each movement is intended to have a unique profile of gesture, texture, and melodic shape. In the first, three progressively richer statements of an arpeggio figure start from the middle of the keyboard and move outward toward registral extremes with increasing momentum. The second movement culls the final motive from the first movement and builds an ever-growing chord that ultimately collapses into cascading, colorfully noisy trills. The final movement begins with a dark, monophonic line that is progressively transformed into the brighter and more homophonic gestures of the previous movements.

Fanfares is dedicated to Joyce Lindorff, and was written especially for the inauguration of Lindorff's new Wolff harpsichord at Weill Recital Hall in New York on March 23, 1994. Friends more than a decade ago as students at The Juilliard School, we find ourselves today teaching at the same institution in Hong Kong.

Reviews

"The kaleidoscopic colours of its central Decisivo movement and the dazzling scale-figures and massive chords of its Declamando finale revealed some of the harpsichord's most unsuspected timbral landscapes."
